Here is the world's second largest cannon ever mounted on land. The reason why these gigantic cannons came to Møvig is: When the Germans had taken Norway and Denmark in 1940, they had a great need to close the Skagerrak. It was then planned a 38 cm. canon battery consisting of four guns here on Møvig, and Hanstholm in Denmark. This is the shortest route between Norway and Denmark and is 116 km. On Møvig was construction in the spring of 1941, and 1,400 people work here at the beginning. Distribution of nationality were 750 Norwegian, 350 Danish and 300 German. At the end of 1942-43 there were also 200 Russian prisoners of war, who remained there until the war ended in 1945.
Battery included in the period 1945-1952 in the Norwegian coastal artillery.
The guns were manufactured in Germany by Friedrich Krupp, Essen in 1940. They were of the same type as the cannons aboard battleships "Bismarck" and "Tirpitz".
